Osmora Scientific Glossary
Identity
Confirmation that the substance present is the intended molecule. Identity may be supported by mass spectrometry — comparing an observed mass against the mass calculated from the sequence — or by another appropriately specific analytical method.
In plain language
Evidence that the molecule is what it's supposed to be — a different question from how pure it is.
Why it matters in research
Identity and purity are distinct: a sample can be correctly identified yet contain impurities, or be pure in a different substance.
Where you'll encounter it
COA identity fields and mass-spectrometry results.
