Osmora Scientific Glossary
Retention time
The characteristic time a component takes to pass through a chromatographic column and reach the detector, measured from injection to peak. It depends on the component's interactions with the stationary and mobile phases and on method conditions.
In plain language
How long a particular component takes to travel through the column before it is detected.
Why it matters in research
Retention time helps distinguish components in a chromatogram and, compared against a reference, can contribute to identity assessment.
Where you'll encounter it
Chromatograms and HPLC method descriptions.
