Amino acid

An organic molecule containing an amino group, a carboxyl group, and a distinguishing side chain attached to a central carbon; amino acids are the monomer units of peptides and proteins.

In plain language

The individual building blocks that link together to form peptides. Each has a different side chain that gives it its character.

Why it matters in research

The properties of a peptide follow from which amino acids it contains and in what order.

Where you'll encounter it

Sequence listings, molecular-weight calculations, and structural descriptions.
